Some Offered Programs...

 

Here is a list of some of the programs offered at the backyard classroom. I'm adding new programs all the time. Most programs can be adapted to all ages, however some are better suited for certain ages. Please keep in mind some programs are seasonal. If you are interested in requesting a private program or would like to see if I can offer a public program again, please contact me. Although these programs were developed to be run in the backyard classroom, some programs can be adapted to be given at your site. Please contact me to discuss your options.

Marvelous Mud Mayhem
Seasonal Program
  • Learn about critters that love mud (besides kids)

  • 'Swim' in our mud pool

  • Make mudpies and sling them in our "mud slinging zone"

  • Paint with mud paints

  • Rinse off in the sprinkler

  • Enjoy a 'dirt' snack while we read a muddy story

 

What we learn: Animals that love mud and why they love it, Fine motor skills to paint, Gross motor skills to run and play.

Bunny Bash
Offered year-round
  • Make a rabbit mask

  • Wear your mask while playing a run around "rabbit & fox" game

  • Read a rabbit story

  • Meet and feed 'Luna' our loppeared bunny and learn all about them

  • Play a food sorting game and learn about foods rabbits eat

  • Sing some silly bunny songs

 

What we learn: All about rabbits, eating healthy foods, fine motor skills for the craft, gross motor skills for the run-around games.

Pop Party
Semi-Seasonal
Fantastic Frogs
Seasonal if live animals included
  • Play with bubbles (big enough to stand in!)

  • Make a jeweled bubble wand

  • Learn the science of bubbles

  • Make dry ice bubbles

  • Use dry ice to make homemade soda pop

  • Read a bubble story while cooling off with soda pop

  • Rinse off in the sprinker

 

What we learn: Science behind bubbles and rainbows, science behind dry ice, fine motor skills to make wands, gross motor skills to run and make bubbles.

  • Learn how a frog changes (metamorphosis)

  • See/hold some live tadpoles and frogs (offered seasonally)

  • Join in a frog chorus activity

  • Sing some frog related songs

  • Read a frog story

  • Learn how to play frog tag

  • Build a mini-frog habitat

  • Color and take home a craft to help us review what we learned at home!

 

What we learn: Stages of frog metamorphosis, frog calls, fine motor skills with the craft and building habitat, what a habitat is, gross motor skills with frog tag.

Splish Splash Blast
Seasonal
  • Play an alphabet/color waterballoon race/hunt

  • Enjoy free play with 'Does it sink or float?'

  • Make your own waterbomb to take home and play waterbomb toss

  • Jump and play on our 'water blob'

  • Cool off with a popsicle snack while we read a fun water story

 

What we learn: Letters and colors with balloon game, patterns and colors with craft, fine motor skills with craft, gross motor skills with all the playing and tossing.

Wacky Watermelons
Semi-Seasonal
  • Build and create with watermelon 'blocks' and create eatable art

  • Play a watermelon themed 'seed-bag' toss

  • Learn counting, numbers, and math with a seed game

  • Make a mess with a watermelon sensory bin

  • Learn the anatomy of watermelon and fruit

  • Enjoy a watermelon snack with reading a watermelon story

 

What we learn: Numbers and math, anatomy of watermelon and fruit, sensory play, gross motor skills with seed-bag toss, fine motor skills with block work.

Pirate P-Arrr-ty
Offered Year Round
  • Build a toy pirate ship and float in down our 'river'

  • Make an eyepatch to wear

  • Hunt and dig for hidden 'treasure' using map of the yard

  • Play pirate tag

  • Read a pirate story while enjoying a yummy snack.

 

What we learn: How to read a map, fine motor skills with crafts, gross motor skills with game.

Oodles of Noodles
Offered Year Round
  • Play with a ton of rainbow noodles in our rainbow sensory bins

  • Run around and play some games using pool noodles

  • Construct a pool noodle marble run and race your marbles

  • Paint a pool noodle picture to take home

  • Learn about some of the smartest animals and how they "use their noodles"

  • Enjoy a chocolaty rice noodle "brain" snack

 

What we learn: Fun facts about animals, basic info on how a brain works, sensory play, gross motor skills with noodle games, fine motor skills with painting and marbles, problem solving and teamwork with marble run construction.
